Denstor was the original lateral moving file housing that was designed originally for cold rooms and other confined storage areas where the conventional movement of a Compactus unit would not work effectively. This original Canadian unit has copied and the rails modified to avoid patent infringement over the years by a number of manufactures over the world. This unit allows for at least 64% of the cabinets to be visible and therefore have 64% of the files easily accessible at all times. Any combination of panel shelving can be placed on the base unit (carriage) which works similarly to a train wagon moving along two rails placed on the floor. The rails are simply sitting on the carpet and not bolted to the floor in many instances.
This is sometimes called the hidden shelf unit. Provides open-shelf, high-density filing for lateral files at a lower cost per metre. These are double depth systems, where shelving bays move laterally in front of rear fixed bays and are best used where space is at a premium, but files are relatively active. Triple depth systems increase space savings, with the least accessible bays used for less-active records. As more than 50% of the shelf faces are available without moving a unit, time spent filing and retrieving information is saved. The user floor space is the same as open shelving irrespective of the number of rows of shelves.
