Lateral filing is where the file cover is placed into the shelving unit by the use of a lateral rather than vertical or horizontal motion.  There a variations on LATERAL FILING, being how they are housed in the unit.  

Lateral Shelf Filing

The folder sits on a shelf being held up by a series of dividers.  These can be metal dividers or Toast Racks, or shelf boxes.

Lateral Suspension Filing

The folder sits in a special suspension pocket that is semi-permanent in the unit.  It is not normally removed with the file. It becomes the home of the file and for this reason is holds indexing information on the plastic protruding label holder.

Hanging Files or T'Glide

These files hang from a central rail.  T'Glide in Australasia or Jalema in Europe and USA.
